Advanced Courses

Low Light / No Light Defensive

Think, move, and shoot effectively in compromised visibility. An advanced course translating proven marksmanship skills to the demanding reality of low-light and no-light defensive encounters.

Course Overview

This is an advanced pistol or carbine course that builds on foundational marksmanship and weapon handling skills, translating them to the demanding environment of low-light and no-light conditions. Participants will be challenged to think, move, and shoot effectively in compromised visibility, preparing them for the realities of defensive and tactical encounters when lighting is limited.

The course progresses through a "crawl, walk, run" methodology, beginning with core concepts and advancing to dynamic, reality-based scenarios. Instruction covers the tactical use of white light — both handheld and weapon mounted.

Prerequisites

Participants must be experienced shooters with a solid understanding of fundamental firearm safety and marksmanship. Prior completion of a basic or defensive pistol/carbine course is required. This is not a beginner level class.

Key Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Low-Light Performance

Understand the physiological and psychological effects of limited visibility on human performance and learn to operate effectively despite those challenges.

  • Marksmanship in Low & No Light

Apply marksmanship fundamentals in low-light and no-light conditions to accurately engage threats at realistic defensive distances.

  • Light Discipline

Master proper light discipline to both identify threats and maintain a tactical advantage — knowing when to use light and when darkness works in your favor.

  • Light Source Transitions

Effectively employ and transition between handheld and weapon-mounted light sources in dynamic, real-world scenarios.

  • Malfunctions & Reloads in the Dark

Clear weapon malfunctions and perform reloads efficiently in the dark — developing the "by feel" capability required for true low-light readiness.

  • Cover & Concealment

Move effectively and use cover and concealment in a darkened environment to protect yourself while maintaining the ability to engage threats.

  • Target Identification & Discrimination

Conduct proper target identification and discrimination to differentiate between a threat and a non-threat — a critical legal and tactical skill.

  • Multi-Target Engagement

Engage multiple targets rapidly and accurately while managing light exposure and maintaining situational awareness.

  • Tactical Use of White Light

Use light to both gain an advantage and temporarily disorient a threat — understanding the offensive and defensive applications of your weapon-mounted and handheld light.
